Using String Comparison in Context for Improved Relevance Feedback in Different Text Media
نویسندگان
چکیده
Query expansion is a long standing relevance feedback technique for improving the effectiveness of information retrieval systems. Previous investigations have shown it to be generally effective for electronic text, to give proportionally better improvement for automatic transcriptions of spoken documents, and to be at best of questionable utility for optical character recognized scanned text documents. We introduce two corpus-based methods based on using a stringedit distance measure in context to automatically detect and correct transcription errors. One method operates at query-time and requires no modification of the document index file, and the other at index-time and operates using the standard query-time expansion process. Experimental investigations show these methods to produce improvements in relevance feedback for all three media types, but most significantly mean that relevance feedback can now successfully be applied to scanned text documents.

Elements of Critical Context Studies
In this paper, it is argued that Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) should be extended to also include what may be called Critical Context Studies (CCS). After a summary of the new theory of context, defined in terms of special mental models in episodic memory, subjectively representing the ‘definition of the communicative situation’ by the participants, it is argued how a critical analysis of te...
متن کاملDocument Image Retrieval Based on Keyword Spotting Using Relevance Feedback
Keyword Spotting is a well-known method in document image retrieval. In this method, Search in document images is based on query word image. In this Paper, an approach for document image retrieval based on keyword spotting has been proposed. In proposed method, a framework using relevance feedback is presented. Relevance feedback, an interactive and efficient method is used in this paper to imp...

This study is a typological description of written formative feedback in an EFL context in Iran. Twenty M.A. students of TEFL participated in the study. They were required to summarize a scholarly article in each session on which the instructor would provide written corrective feedback (CF). Written formative comments were extracted, coded, and categorized into various types, such as asking for...

This paper describes the participation of the Human Interface Laboratory of Meiji University in the ImageCLEF2008 photo retrieval task. We submitted eight retrieval runs taking two main approaches. The first approach combined Text-Based Image Retrieval (TBIR) and Context-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). The second approach applied query expansion using conceptual fuzzy sets (CFS). A CFS is a metho...

Abstract This study examined the effect of two types of feedback, post-text as a written feedback and recast as an oral one on written grammatical accuracy of Iranian intermediate EFL learners. To this end, 45 intermediate students who were studying at Ideal Language Institute in Sari were selected based on their performance on the Nelson proficiency test, and then divided into three groups (tw...
